Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is a 2009 American comedy-drama film written, produced, and directed by John Krasinski. It is based on a short story collection of the same name by David Foster Wallace.

It follows Sara Quinn (Julianne Nicholson) as she interviews men as part of her graduate studies. As she listens to various men taking about their twisted feelings for and relationships with women, she is also dealing with a breakup.

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men is made up of snapshots of inner feelings of random men about women in a “postfeminist” world. Some of them Sara encounters in her life, and some of them are subjects of her study.

The film is an interesting watch as far as these snapshots are concerned. There is no real narrative to the film. There are some genuinely insightful moments in the movie, but in the end, it’s a bit of a scattershot. But a worthy first effort by John Krasinski.

It is thought-provoking. And it does make me want to read David Foster Wallace.
