Promised Land (2012 Film)

Promised Land tells a story that is important and relevant. You can never make enough films showing how big corporations misinform, manipulate and seduce people into going against their own interest. And The film shows pretty well how these big corporations are made up of good people still as a group most of what they achieve is pure evil. Continue reading Promised Land (2012 Film)

Sorry to Bother You (2018 Film): New Marxism Meets Absurdist Comedy

Sorry to Bother You is an unpolished mess in a lot of ways. The “white voice” dubbing is unsynchronized, too many jokes don’t land because of bad editing and the film turns midway into a weird fantasy. But all of that doesn’t matter. It still manages to entertain and enlighten with brave unabashed originality.

Like the best satires, it’s hilarious and makes you feel uncomfortable by telling the truth. It uses weird symbolism, cinematography and storytelling techniques to make its point.   Continue reading Sorry to Bother You (2018 Film): New Marxism Meets Absurdist Comedy

The End of the F***ing World (2017 Series): Dexter Meets Teen Comedy

A loner boy who thinks he is a psychopath and an obnoxious girl is hardly original. With the first few episodes, all I could think was kill her already so that we can move on.

But the show takes a turn for the better when they actually run away. Now it’s a Bonnie-and-Clyde adventure story. The two kids having all the adventures, committing crimes, and learning what it means to love someone… Continue reading The End of the F***ing World (2017 Series): Dexter Meets Teen Comedy

The Big Sick (2017 film)

The Big Sick is hit and miss but mostly miss. It is occasionally funny. It is also sometimes heartwarming. But I still don’t get the fuss it made.

Kumail is a brilliant standup comic, but he isn’t a great actor. He falls flat in emotional scenes and isn’t all that great in funny scenes either. The story might be novel for the American audience, but it follows the same theme that almost all 90’s Bollywood films follow. Continue reading The Big Sick (2017 film)

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (2012 series)

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is funny at times. Sometimes it’s also insightful and fun. But to me, Seinfeld is not likable. He is too full of himself and self-assured to be funny. He does have some smart insights about the art of comedy. The casual format of the show could’ve worked with a more interesting host.

And some guests are fun to watch. Bob Einstein, Mel Brooks, and Michael Richards deserve a special mention here. Continue reading Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (2012 series)

Get Out (2017 film)

Get Out is hysterically funny as a satire. It is also bleak in its outlook. But most of all its thoroughly entertaining as a thriller. Jordan Peele maintains a tight grip on the film throughout, never overindulging with either the satirical part or the horror part. Peele manages the tension and sense of danger perfectly to justify the horrific last act. He is supported by some near-perfect acting performances. Continue reading Get Out (2017 film)
