A Quiet Place is a 2018 American horror film directed by John Krasinski. Krasinski also wrote the screenplay with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. The film stars Krasinski, alongside Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe.
The plot revolves around the Abbot family in a post-apocalyptic world. Extraterrestrial creatures have taken over the world. They are blind but have an acute sense of hearing, which they use to hunt animals including humans. Abbots have to take extraordinary measures to avoid making any sound. They have designed their life accordingly including communicating in sign language most of the time.

At its core, A Quiet Place is a film about parents doing everything to protect their kids. Lee and Evelyn make extreme sacrifices to protect their children and to bring a new child into the world.
The premise of creatures hunting them is a symbol for all the dangers that parents guard their kids against. And noise is an appropriate metaphor as well, for something to protect them from. Even on the superficial level, the premise is scary that our natural instinct to communicate and draw attention to ourselves can be our doom.
Some could see the plot as a pro-life political statement. The family does take a significant risk by continuing with the pregnancy—even though it would’ve been tough to have an abortion too. But I think it’s a personal statement about the need to bring life into the world.
Krasinski manages to capture the oppressiveness of the Quiet. He uses silence, the natural sounds and background music well to build tension and dialogue to relive it. It’s a clear win for him as an actor, director, and writer.
Main Characters
John Krasinski, as Lee Abbott
Lee is the father of the family. He is a stoic but loving father who wants to prepare his kids for the world they find themselves in. He is an engineer and uses his skills to protect his family.
Krasinski plays the Clint Eastwood-type character well. And he brings pathos into the role that would’ve been hard for Eastwood himself.
Emily Blunt as Evelyn Abbott
Evelyn is the mother of the family. She has three kids and one on the way when the apocalypse happens. She is a doctor.
Millicent Simmonds as Regan Abbott
Regan is the oldest child. She is deaf. Presumably, she is the reason why the family knows sign language. She thinks her father blames her for the death of her brother.
Simmonds is deaf herself, and I think that fact brings more realism to her acting.
Noah Jupe as Marcus Abbott
Marcus is the oldest son of Lee and Evelyn.
Cade Woodward as Beau Abbott
Beau is the younger son of Lee and Evelyn.
